WHO: Heather Mason/Sharon da Silva (
merged) & David Alleyne (
helpdesk_hero)
WHAT: David offered to take Heather go-karting.
WHERE: indoor go-kart track
WHEN: maybe a week or so ago
WARNINGS: pg-13 for Ms. Mason's ability to curse
Heather didn't know what she'd expected when David made his initial offer. She thought he'd forget or, darkly, 'forget' and that would be the end of it. When he'd texted her and they'd made plans, she found herself pleasantly surprised and oddly giddy. It was enough to cast off the shadow that had been following her since the meeting with the Heart.
She rarely considers her outfit most days, often opting for whatever she touches first rather than what might look best, but finds herself waffling and uncertain. You're being silly, she thinks, pressing down her nerves. It's just because it's something new for her, that's all. She ends up dressing as conservatively as she usually does, leggings and long sleeves and that damaged white vest she's always wearing, though she finds herself pulling on a pale blue turtleneck to match her eyes.
When the time finally comes to head to the track, Heather finds that her giddiness has begun to ebb, replaced instead with a sort of buzzing eagerness she's unused to. There'd been so much awful in her head lately but, at the moment, they were shockingly absent. A welcome change, one she doesn't think on long, her attention almost entirely on her companion.
"Gonna let me beat you?" She asks him with a playful quirk of her lips. She didn't forget he said he'd go easy on her, after all.

He makes his decision for a vehicle a lot more thoughtfully before ending up with hot pink number six. His rationale? The machine had clearly had a tune-up more recently than other ones, from the look of the engine. Of course, that could just as likely mean it would break down, but he was betting not.
When she leans in he chuckles.
"We won't blow up. And see those big foam barriers? On the other side are tires. Between them, they absorb the impact if anything goes wrong. The beginner course is easy, like they said. Simple loop. No fast or sharp turns. We don't have to go fast, it's about learning to be comfortable with the controls. Hell, we can stick to this if you want."
Though David would LOVE to get on the real tracks and put some people to shame.

Heather watches as he goes through the karts before finally making his pick. She can only blink at his reasoning and respond with a,"I thought mine was cute."
And in a 'look-at-me' vibrancy. She doesn't know enough about engines or treads or how smooth the steering is but she knows colors. She likes colors. As his explanation comes to an end, her eyes narrow a little competitively,"Please, what would be the fun in sticking to the kiddie course? I kinda wanna see if I can beat you now."
There it is: she's genuinely excited, almost vibrating with energy. Sure, there's something like nervousness beneath it all, but it's far from the forefront.

He's definitely teasing and he's definitely wants to see her smile. She's excited, and that's not something David's used to seeing from her. And it's making him more excited by proxy.

Who doesn't enjoy a little competition? Even if she knows deep down she likely has no chance in hell. (It's all right, it's fun.)
Almost too soon, they're led to their vehicles, each one a distance apart. Oh fuck, now she is nervous, but this is just the first run of something easy. She's got this (as long as she does better than the 12 year old, she'll go home happy, honestly). There's a recap of the rules, along with the safety procedures, and then some command for them to have fun and off they were.
Heather isn't good. Not at first and would have gotten dead last if not for someone else getting turned entirely around (thank god for the little things). She's starting to think there was a reason she always ducked out whenever she had the option of going to her exam. Still, she's grinning, not at all put off by her initial troubles.
"I'll be better next time, just you watch." She calls to David, even if she might not actually be any better.

"Hey, you will get better. Practice makes perfect. Well, technically perfect practice makes perfect performance. I believe in you, though. And when you win, I'll buy you lunch."
And even he has to pause and consider. Did he... did he just flirt? No. Not possible.

The potential promise of a free lunch was nice, and definitely spoke to her cheap soul, but more than that that simple statement just before it matters more. Her bright grin softens as she studies his face a moment longer than she usually does, not bothering to dart her eyes away shyly when she realizes even.
"All right, now I really wanna win," Sort of. It doesn't matter if she does, for some reason,"but if you win, I'll buy you lunch. Fair?"

From his experience, people learn better when there is a bit of competition, and something on the line. A reward beyond just bragging. And David is happy to provide it.
"What are we going to eat if you win?"

A good slice of classic New York style pizza would hit the spot just about as much as a grilled pastrami. She was always going to be happy regardless of who wins but now she feels a little more invested. Though, she's looking forward more to spending a little more time with David than she is about where they end up after.
She's not sure if that's good or not.
Soon enough, they're called back to the karts. Another round, though Heather does much better this time, a near tie for fourth. This is all a lot more fun than she was expecting and she doesn't feel that innate need to hide her lack of skill or knowledge, or show off, or prove herself. As the workers set up the next race, Heather pulls off her helmet, running her fingers through her now frizzy hair (it's not like she cares, shut up). There's no doubt she's enjoying herself, a bounce to her step, voice a little lighter, and a near constant smile on her face. It's sheepish now.
"So, all right, I'm probably not gonna win, so I hope you have a good place picked out."
She's not put out at all by the thought of losing. She could always lose to someone else, someone worse, like that twelve year old (little ass stuck his tongue out at her, damn kids).

He's excited, though, because this is already a lot of fun. Especially when, after winning the next race, she's still smiling. Smiling in a way that just gets David grinning too, more than his winning had. His own helmet stays on, no reason to worry about his hair, and he nods.
"I know a great place, highest quality stuff. And with my chef skills, that means something to me. But if you want, we could do pizza another time. And you can order whatever you want. Can't dust your ass at karting all day and not feed you."

He makes her feel normal, or gives her a taste of what it could be like, in a place where normal doesn't seem to exist. She feels like a dumb, normal girl, and she likes it. As it were, she quickly realizes how her words may come across, cheeks turning a dusty shade of rose. She looks away,"I mean, you know..."
"If you end up wanting to hang out again sometime." Her ears feel hot and she's glad that her hair covers them. When people know you like them, they suddenly have way more power over you than they should. And she doesn't want to ruin this friendship.
That's what it is, right?
no subject
Of course it's easy to make someone feel normal when you lived as he did. He's seen enough of weird stuff to find people like her fully normal, no matter the background.
"I think I'd really like hanging out again sometime. Even if it's only to teach you more mixed drinks. For your own sake."
He makes sure the words are gentle, not too eager, definitely kind. Not meant to get her too nervous.

She's got recipes memorized by heart now, including a variety of popular other worldly drinks that required a bit of sucking up and smiling to convince her boss to splurge on a few new types of liquor. Still,"but I could always use another lesson."
Especially from him, though that thought is immediately written off.
Too soon, they're called again to the track, though this time it's not the one for novices. Heather's too impatient to spend too long learning or bothering with perfection; she's enjoying herself and he seems to be, too, and that's all that matters. All of this has made her forget about the situation they're all in. Her worries seem distant.
"Hope that place has good pastrami!" She gestures at him with her index finger, an unsaid mock of a threat, before placing her helmet back on her head. A few runs on this course and she's going to be hungry, if she's not already feeling the tug already.

And he is nothing if not reliable. Except for one race where some asshole teen puts him into the wall and he only gets third, David consistently hits first place. All four of the races they have before David is eager to take a break because yeah, DEFINITELY time for a deli run.
He grins as he climbs out of his kart and smirks at Heather.
"Well, fun or what?"
