Look at all of these bright, shining new faces! There’s even a few less bright, less shining faces, but hey, this city welcomes all types. Chances are, if you’ve just arrived, you're seeing some pretty crazy things, unless you're used to an eye-blinding amount of neon, robots, weird-ass technology, magic, and an omnipresent police force...and hey, if you are, congrats, you're gonna settle in juuuuust fine. But for the rest of you, the Head knows this has gotta be pretty overwhelming, right?

Well, since your quaint individual processing units are probably having a hard time, why not link up with another one? By which the Head means...

Hello, new citizens of Dualis,
and welcome to your monthly Network Adjacency Protocol~!

NAPs are a monthly community networking event similar to the Earth concept of speed dating! Two citizens (new arrivals and old hands alike) are placed at a table together with a handy cue card of queries to help break the proverbial ice. Ask queries and receive results, or ignore the card and yeet yourself straight into a brand new friendship! But don't be too shy, you've only got ten minutes together, and if you just sit in silence for the whole ten, the Network Admins are likely to come supervise and try to repair the uplink through a mild shock to the ol' central nervous system. You might find yourself saying all sorts of unintended facts about yourself if that happens...probably better to just make friends, right? Who doesn’t like friends?!

This month’s event is held at the brand new RoCocoa Cat Cafe, a sparkly new establishment that caters to children and the young at heart with iced and hot cocoa drinks of all kinds, delicious pastries, age-appropriate live music, and of course many friendly kitties who love to lounge in laps. The cats are of all shapes, sizes, and colors, including some who may look a little different from what you expect, or may look like an ordinary cat but are actually anything but ordinary underneath that adorable fur coat. All cats in the cafe are adoptable, too, if you meet a new furry friend and just can’t bear to go home without them!

So pull up a chair, get to know your new neighbors, and enjoy a sugary treat or two with the resident furbabies. You might just meet your new two- or four-legged best friend!

Yeah, I guess so. I mean, I've never been here before, so I guess that makes me pretty new!

Not really, actually. A little over a month.

[His eyes linger on Finn's face, and soon enough the leech-mouthed cat jumps from it. It's replaced immediately with a centipedecat. He glances to it, eyebrows raising just a little- but then he looks back to Finn.]

Your stuff's as good as gone. There anything in it you needed?

Aww man... the princesses made that backpack for me.

[ Give him a moment to mourn the passing of his second backpack.

OK moment over. ]

It had a bunch of stuff in it... And I'll have to get a new sword again, too.

[Princesses? That earns him another blink. Normally, he'd wonder just how old this guy is, but who knows. It's probably a Thing wherever he's from. He (reluctantly) pets the centipedecat as it scoots on over to him. At least most of it. It's long enough to still have some of its body on the ground.]

Wouldn't waste your time with the vendors here. They mostly sell replicas.

[There's something else- but he's not stupid enough to mention it here. Not at something where what they say could very well be monitored. He pauses mid-pet, adjusting his position to pull a leg upto his body, chin resting on one knee, heel on the seat.]

It's only for a year. A lot of people don't buy that, though.

Man, I can't be hanging around here for a year! What if they need me back in Ooo? And Jake and BMO will be worried... I gotta wrap this driz up and get back there before everything gets all skronked up again like last time.

[ He's not actually that worried, mostly because he can't really imagine being stuck here for a whole year. He's pretty sure he'll figure it out and be back home within a week. Also he doesn't have a good sense of how long a year is, really. ]

[Ooo. Driz. Skronk..ed?

He's not harsh about it, because Finn seems so young. But... this world, it doesn't work that way. Individuals mean nothing. There's no such thing as heroes.]

You should be careful. You've got no idea where the Head is. And unarmed, you don't stand much of a chance of changing anything.

Yeah, I know.

[ He's bummed that he can't just charge in and fix everything, but it's really not that unusual for him these days. Life gets even more complicated as you grow up, apparently. And this isn't an ancient dungeon full of puzzles and dumb monsters. ]

I'll think of something... I've been in worse pickles than this, even without Jake, and we always find a way to save everybody in the end.

[bravers]

...Right.

[He gives Finn a small look at that, tilting his head slightly. Points for optimism, sure. But it's blind. He can't help but wonder how long it'll be before it lands him in trouble.]

Look, here's not the best place to talk about it. They've got to be recording this, same as they check the network. [Why else hold something like this, if not to observe?] But you're going to stand a better chance with people around you. So find 'em.

[It's uttered, more than spoken. And some part of him feels he's a pot calling a kettle black, but it's true.]

...And, seriously, watch your back.

[ He hunches over the table and peers around the room, as though this makes him less suspicious. ]
