It's almost nice to know someone else is in a bad off state because of this place. It's been misery since he learned the truth about the chips and the clones.

"I thought we could make something for the people who were here and went home." Because they totally went home, yep. "But I don't have all the names." There's a odd held-back urgency to his tone. How do people do this? Be subtle.

'Went home'. Steph turns away, biting her lip and blinking back tears. Back in the village that was the optimistic way of saying 'dead', or 'probably dead'. Back then she'd been all out of optimism.

"I don't think that's a good idea," she says quietly, still thinking mostly of Vergil.

it's that kind of year

Squall clenches his fist.

"I know." His voice is just as quiet. He's never liked acknowledging death in relation to himself and the people he cared about. Tried not to think about it. Funny how that works out when he was trained his whole life to be a disposable soldier.

"I think we should do it anyway. So no one else does anything stupid like that." Crass maybe but the Heart really did go about it wrong. He doesn't want them to fall into the same trap.

not a great sign in February

She frowns, angry for a moment. She knows she's really only angry at the city, and at the universe for letting this all happen. Mostly she's just confused.

"How's that work again?"

Squall shrugs and is silent for a while struggling to think of a way to phrase it that won't come off suspicious.

"Keep a closer eye on our neighbours."

It probably comes off sounding terrible though.

She stares at him blearily for a moment. He's clearly trying to hint at something, but it really isn't clear what. Who are their neighbors? Each other? The city? If he's going door to door it at least has something to do with all of them here against their will. And he wants to throw a 'party', so he wants to get them together...

"Okay, I'll help, if only because you definitely shouldn't be writing the invitations."
