we’re ready to make you one of us.

WHO: Open to all Dualizens
WHAT: When Roboclones Attack
WHERE: Anywhere in the city!
WHEN: The night of Oct. 19
WARNINGS: Please use these if applicable! And if you happen to end up dead by roboclone, please fill out the death form!

It’s an ordinary night in Dualis, until it suddenly becomes a very dark and stormy night in Dualis. There hasn’t been a single day of unpleasant weather since any of you arrived, but soon after the sun begins to sink behind the city’s skyscrapers and the neon lights intensify for the night, storm clouds begin to gather overhead and unleash a cacophony of thunder, a deluge of rain, and brilliant spikes of lightning arcing across the sky.

It’s a violent storm, to be sure, but surely severe weather is no challenge in such a technologically advanced city as Dualis, right? As long as you stay indoors, you can keep safe and dry until the storm passes.

Except … less than an hour after the storm begins, the power all across the city goes completely out. All buildings are dark except for the illumination cast by lightning across brick and steel and glass. All electronics - including phones - are dead, all biometric locks are disabled, and no attempts to call, text, or reach the internet or the network succeed. Eerily, the streets are silent and empty.

Under normal circumstances, such a widespread blackout would merely be odd and inconvenient, but tonight, circumstances are anything but normal. About half an hour after the blackout begins, something approaches you, wherever you are. In the dark, you’ll be able to make out that its shape is humanoid, but maybe its motions are jerky and mechanical. As it draws closer and you get a better look, by candlelight or flashlight or flash of lightning, you recognize the face staring back at you.

That face is your own.

The face, like the rest of the body, is likely some degree of incomplete, an incongruous jigsaw of metal and flesh, but it’s definitely yours. And this machine doppelganger’s mission is soon made apparent as it launches a targeted attack on you:

It’s here to kill you.

After nearly four hours, the storm subsides and the power is restored and the city falls back into its normal rhythm. Will you survive until then?

May the odds be ever in your favor, friends.

All Steph wanted was to enjoy what hot coffee was left in the pot before it cooled off on the unpowered burner. Apparently that was too much to ask, if the knife that burried itself in the wall in front of her was any indication. She ducked out of the way of a second blade, which bounced off of the coffee maker and clattered onto the counter. She had the foresight to snatch it up as she turned to face her attacker.

The robot stood by the open drawer containing the kitchen knives, which it seemed determined to empty. Steph narrowly avoided a butcher knife by throwing herself to the ground, leaving the blade to stick into a drawer for a moment before falling, too heavy to stay where it was. She left that one where it fell, since it was unweildy to take with her. Instead she dove at the cabinet under the sink and pulled a fire extinguisher out just in time to deflect a fourth knife. She sprayed her would-be assassin full strength, blinding it long enough to make her escape.

The thing's face was complete, leaving no question as to who it was meant to resemble as it gave chase into the stairwell. The fire extinguisher flung blindly at it by its prey did little to slow it down, as did the cry of "can't we work this out like reasonable humanoids?!"

Jumping and swinging from railings the pursuit continued, the robot finally cutting Steph off with leaps that might have sprained or broken human limbs. Back into the hallway she went, leaving a clear line of sight between her and her pursuer unless someone came to her rescue. Basically, she was screwed.

The thing about being Robin is this: your ears are trained to recognize the sound of a fight, and your reaction to run toward the danger becomes instinct. It's been a long time since Jason was Robin, but that training has stayed with him, and he moves quickly toward the all-too-familiar noises of unrest, only to find himself face to face with ... two Stephs.

"Aw, hell," he mutters, "not this shit again." He's had quite enough of evil twin attacks, thanks.

"Don't suppose it's gonna be any use to ask 'Will the real Stephanie please stand up'?"

"This again," Steph confirms. With no cover in sight she runs in serpentine, as low to the ground as she can manage without giving up speed.

"I would, but I'm kinda trying to stay low here," she adds as one knife flies past her and another lands in her arm before falling to the carpet. Cursing, she ducks to grab the clean blade as she passes it. The bloody one she can't afford to go back for, though she hates leaving ammo for her doppelganger.

"Please tell me you're armed!"

"Only with my boyish good looks and impeccable charm," he answers, punctuated with a deep sigh.

It's not entirely true; he does have a knife that he always keeps hidden away on himself or under his pillow at night when he manages to sleep, and it's that knife he retrieves to brandish as he breaks into a sprint toward Steph's double. Past experiences and the robot's state of completion mean that Jason doesn't realize he's dealing not with an actual clone but a mechanical one, but he aims to tackle the attacker all the same.

"Watch those good looks," she comments as they pass each other, "she's a stabber!" In the mean time she races to the other end of the hall, where she can take cover around a corner.

StephBot flings a knife at her approaching opponent, leaving one in her hand to grapple with. She braces herself for the tackle, pointing the knife out to stab him as they collide.

Aleifr hadn't been looking for Steph, at least not specifically. It'd been a hunch, really. A worry that, if there'd been a doppelgangrel to pose as him and come to claim his life, that there could be others stalking the darkened streets. Many of the people in the dorms could handle themselves, but not all of them would be equipped for a fight - especially not one so jarring.

So, once he'd helped the clientele at Scintillation calm down and bunker themselves for safety, he'd gone to help others who might need it.

That, is when he'd heard Steph, and fate had delivered him in time to make a difference.

An access doorway behind Steph's duplicate opens, and Aleifr steps through, covered in ugly, purpling bruises and bloodied bandages covering a number of wounds. As he does, he draws the long-bladed knife he carries out of the sheathe on his hip.

Steph-bot, hearing the door creak behind her, turns to face her new opponent with a muttered "crap." She adjusts her grip on the knife in her right hand rather than throw it, holding on to the three clutched in her left. Plunging forward with all the confidence and none of the grace of her human counterpart she aims the single blade at the large man's stomach.

The real Steph is running too hard to hear any of this, but risks a look when no more blades come flying her direction. She skids on one heel to make a quick 180. Aleifr makes for a great distraction, but she doesn't intend to leave him to fend for himself. She has one confiscated knife, but she can't bring herself to throw it at a thing that looks so exactly like herself, give or take a few open panels and dangling wires. Instead she darts back and into this floor's kitchen to pick up a chair.

Aleifr catches what he presumes to be the genuine Steph darting back towards the kitchen out of the corner of his eye, but he doesn't have the time to pay any further attention to her. Even though she's not as quick as Steph herself, the doppelgangrel with a knife is a far more pressing concern.

She lunges forward to ram the knife into his belly, and he reacts by throwing a hard front kick towards her chest. He could probably overpower her unless she's got far more surprises than his double had, but he's been carved up enough for one night. His limbs are longer than hers, and he plans to put that advantage to use.

The kick lands hard, sending Steph-bot flying back onto her butt. Rather than waste time trying to get to her feet she flings the knife in her right hand in the direction of his face, then grabs another from her left.

The real Steph has been putting her time to good use as well, and emerges now from the kitchen with a chair which she smashes across her double's back with a yell. Two of the feet break off, and while it might have knocked a human out cold the robot is only stunned and a little dented.

Aleifr drops out of the way of the knife, but it still whistles uncomfortably close past his head.

He spreads his feet, getting his balance and readying himself to dive out of the way of a follow-up, but before anything comes, Steph charges out of the kitchen and cracks a chair across her duplicate's back. It doesn't put the doppelgangrel down, but it does create an opening - one Aleifr plans on taking advantage of.

He charges in and slashes at Steph's copy, knife flashing in a wide, glittering arc.

"Eee," Steph comments with a grimace at the broken ends of the chair. She was expecting that to be more effective... and just sort of generally different. Her attention returns to the robot as it groans, starting to move out of the way of that knife. She shoves the chair at it and holds it there, an unbroken leg on either side of the robot, more or less pinning her in place for Aleifr's attack.

"Bitch," snarls the double as she hits the wooden legs with all the force she was trying to use to roll towards the wall. The knife slices easily through artificial skin, leaving a thin scar across the metal plating underneath.

"Okay, it's official," Steph declares. "This is the weirdest fight I've ever been in. Dracula included."

The robot, not particularly fazed by her injury and still armed, tries to stab Aleifr first with the single knife in her right hand and then with both of the others in her left.

Aleifr circles back, surprisingly quick for someone his size, but even that and his reach only barely gets him outside of the duplicate Steph's range. Instead of slicing into his flesh, she just cuts another hole in his already blood-soaked shirt.

"The fuck's a dracula?"

The second stab's another near thing, but his strides carry him further than the doppelgangrel's do. Once she's completed the attack though, he plants his foot and drives forward, trying to catch her before she's reset from the attack.

He's aiming for the neck this time. Going for something vital had worked on his double, after all. Hopefully it'll do the same the second time 'round.

"Fictional character," is the short answer. She's focused on keeping her double pinned, especially now that the thing is moving around trying to throw her off. It isn't easy with only a half-broken chair, and the thing is a lot stronger than she is.

The robot swipes at Aleifr again as he attacks, but the strike slices open her throat. Her hand jerks oddly as fluid drains from a cut tube, the wiring sparks, and the machine goes still. Steph winces at the sight, watching to make sure the thing doesn't move again. It helps that it's frozen in place, not going limp like a human would.

Finally she drops the chair and takes a step back.

"Let's never, ever do this again."

"Suits me fine." Aleifr grunts, each word punctuated by a heavy breath. He could feel his limbs getting heavy - both from exhaustion and the blood leaking from the cuts dotting his arms, chest, and face. Cuts, which, by the way, fucking hurt.

"You alright?" He asks, giving her a quick once over to see for himself.

"Physically, at least," she answers with a shrug. It's hard to take her eyes off of the odd creation that wears her face, frozen in an expression of rage. Finally she turns her attention to her rescuer.

"What about you? How much of that blood is yours?" She's sure he can take a good beating, but that volume of blood looks to be on the dangerous side for her tastes.

"Enough of it." Aleifr huffs, feeling his limbs grow a little heavier as the rush of adrenaline wears off. "My copy found me at work."

He experimentally flexes the fingers on his heavily-bandaged right hand, trying to curl them into a fist, but scowls when they barely twitch.
ichoosefight: (and then there was one)

[personal profile] ichoosefight 2020-01-16 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
She grimaces at the weak twitching of those fingers. It's obviously not the motion he was going for.

"Alright, I've got supplies in my room, it's probably the closest first aid you're gonna get. Can you climb, or do we have to take the stairs? Neither of us should be wandering around on our own right now."
aleifr: (15)

[personal profile] aleifr 2020-01-17 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Stairs." He answers without a moment's hesitation. "Wouldn't trust my grip right now. Even if I was lifting something a lot lighter than me."
ichoosefight: (wary)

[personal profile] ichoosefight 2020-01-17 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
She nods. She doesn't like it, but she expected as much.

"Stay behind me. I'm on the top floor, but they could still come at us from downstairs." She keeps her voice low, though she suspects with the technology available here the robots probably have heat and vibration sensors. She waves for him to stick to the wall as she creeps to the stairwell door and turns the knob in near silence. Her back is to the door frame as she pushes the door gently open, waits a moment, then peeks through. The stairwell is totally silent, so she waves him to follow her up the stairs.

The process is repeated at the door into the hall, but it's all clear until they're safely inside her room. She locks the door behind them before digging into the closet, as comfortable in the darkness as though she were working. In a way, she is. The backpack she pulls out holds her first aid kit, but it's also where she keeps her Batgirl gear. She sets that aside for now. She may need some of it, but she hasn't decided how much. The first aid kit is all she needs right now.

"Alright, sit. Let's take a look."

Aleifr can't help but sigh when she says that she's on the top floor, because of course she is given how this damned night is going. That's, however, is as far as his commentary goes. After that, he nods his understanding and falls into step behind her.

At each landing he waits for her signal and then plods up the stairs after her, his legs feeling just a little heavier each time. He's damned grateful by the time they've finally reached her room, and when she offers him a seat he settles down into it heavily and lets out a long exhale.

The wrappings around his right hand were sticky with drying blood. It takes a little coaxing to find the end and begin to unwind them, but he manages eventually. The pain is ... it isn't less than it was before, but it was duller. More distant.

It wasn't necessarily a good thing given he'd had a hole stabbed through the center of his palm.
ichoosefight: (no fists this time)

[personal profile] ichoosefight 2020-01-18 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
She unwraps them all with gentle efficiency, tossing them in her small trash bin as she goes. She might need more bandages than she usually keeps in her backpack, but first she has to assess the damage.

"This shouldn't hurt," she warns him, "so tell me if it does." The blood left under the bandages is cleaned off with (alcohol-free) wipes up to a point where she can see the wound itself. She hums thoughtfully at it.

"Could be a lot worse. What did he get you with?" She starts cleaning what blood she can from the wound itself before she can apply pressure to try to stop the sluggish bleeding.
aleifr: (5)

[personal profile] aleifr 2020-01-18 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
"My knife." He growls, wincing slightly as she dabs at the wound. "My double found me at work. I managed to stab it in the gut during the fight ... as you can imagine, was a bit less effective than that usually is. Wasn't expecting it to smash me in the jaw and pull the knife out of it's belly and try to stab me with it."
ichoosefight: (okay concussion let's make some noise)

[personal profile] ichoosefight 2020-01-18 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Crap," she sighs. "Probably got some of that robot juice in your bloodstream. Are you having any symptoms that aren't normal for blood loss?"

She peers at the injury more closely, half hoping she'll be able to tell by sight what sort of gunk got into it from the knife.

"This'll need stitching," she adds as an aside.
aleifr: (11)

[personal profile] aleifr 2020-01-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
"I figured as much."

Hopefully something in this gods damned city will be able to heal the wound cleanly, though. Without the aid of someone can knit flesh with magic, wounds like the one on his hand tend to have a lasting effect.

"As for feeling differently ..." He shakes his head. "No. Nothing that I've noticed, at least, but it hasn't been long."
ichoosefight: (sneaky ninja stuff... in a dress)

[personal profile] ichoosefight 2020-01-18 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well keep an eye on it." If they're lucky all of the poison bled out. "We'll need to get you to a real doctor as soon as we can. Hold this in place? You gotta press hard." She places two lumps of gauze, one on each side of the wound. Once he takes them from her she can get out the stitching needle and surgical thread.
