i've been bitten by the bug ...

WHO: Open to all residents
WHAT: Inoculation Season, plus your regular monthly NAPs session
WHERE: Throughout the city, with NAPs held at The Ax Hole.
WHEN: Sept. 10-30 for plague shots and associated side effects; Sept. 10-14 for NAPs
WARNINGS: Please use if applicable!

So tell me, what do you prescribe for these symptoms?

Remember that awful plague that wiped out the city's entire original population? You know, the entire reason you've been brought here? Well, the medical science community of Dualis has been hard at work concocting a cure for as long as anyone can remember, with minimal results. But during the morning of the 10th, news of a breakthrough is announced is a special city-wide bulletin. All media channels are overtaken with this message, and alerts hit every citizen's phone. The best part? Science needs your help!

There's no formal approval process for new vaccines and medications, just a series of volunteer trials before it's determined whether what's being tested is effective. All residents are invited to participate in these trials, with a bonus of 200 extra duos as compensation for their time and possible suffering. Simply head down to your nearest MedDualis clinic and inform the MedDroids supervising that you're reporting for your civic duty. Participants will be given a quick, easy, and practically painless inoculation shot in the arm, and will walk out the door 200 duos richer. Neat, huh?

Participants will be warned that like all experimental drugs, there may be side effects. A non-comprehensive list of those possible side effects includes: minor appearance changes (hair/skin/eye color), enhancing or reducing senses (smell, taste, hearing, sight, etc.), sudden mild development of extranormal abilities (telepathy, super strength, super speed, etc.), the ability to share dreams (if you're not tired of that sorta thing after last month), and/or loss of control over abilities you already possess, or those abilities misfiring. Hey, at least death isn't included on this list!

Any intrepid Dualizen who comes down with a case of weirdness as a result of doing their civic duty will find that weirdness will wear off by the end of the month. The Head thanks you for your sacrifice!

Don't you feel the fever like I do?

Look at all of these bright, shining new faces! There’s even a few less bright, less shining faces - maybe even a few folks without faces - but hey, this city welcomes all types. Chances are, if you’ve just arrived, you're seeing some pretty crazy things, unless you're used to an eye-blinding amount of neon, robots, weird-ass technology, magic, and an omnipresent police force...and hey, if you are, congrats, you're gonna settle in juuuuust fine. But for the rest of you, the Head knows this has gotta be pretty overwhelming, right?

Well, since your quaint individual processing units are probably having a hard time, why not link up with another one? By which the Head means...

Hello, new citizens of Dualis,
and welcome to your monthly Network Adjacency Protocol~!

NAPs are a monthly community networking event similar to the Earth concept of speed dating! Two citizens (new arrivals and old hands alike) are placed at a table together with a handy cue card of queries to help break the proverbial ice. Ask queries and receive results, or ignore the card and yeet yourself straight into a brand new friendship! But don't be too shy, you've only got ten minutes together, and if you just sit in silence for the whole ten, the Network Admins are likely to come supervise and try to repair the uplink through a mild shock to the ol' central nervous system. You might find yourself saying all sorts of unintended facts about yourself if that happens...probably better to just make friends, right? Who doesn’t like friends?!

This month’s event is held at an exciting new establishment called The Ax Hole! The 'Hole is an indoor ax-throwing range plus bar plus mid-price grill-type restaurant, the first of its kind to find a home here in Dualis. You must be at least 18 to drink and/or throw axes, and if you are throwing axes, there is a limit of one drink per hour. The bartenders are very strict about enforcing this rule, and employees are available to give safety instructions on proper ax-throwing technique and supervise activities.

This is a family-friendly establishment, so anyone under 18 is welcome in the restaurant section and the viewing room between the restaurant and range to watch the ax-throwing action, but they are absolutely not allowed inside the range, even just to watch. In fact, anyone who wishes admittance to the range must sign a waiver stating that they understand the risks of participating and agree to hold the Ax Hole free of liability in the event of any accidents that cause injury or death.

If that hasn't scared you off yet, come on down and meet your new neighbors! Oh, and do try to exit with at least as many fingers and limbs as when you entered, OK?

[Her lips curve into a warm smile.]

So I can tell. Maybe our worlds are similar, even if they aren't the same place. [She wonders if this man is more to her than what he seems; maybe more to another version of her like her sons world. There is at least one person still living in this city that she can ask but that will have to wait for later.]

That... I do not know.

My brother can be insufferable. He has trouble sitting still.

"I know but it spoke to me." She rarely talked about the tests that she'd undergone while in Hydra's 'care' but she'd been exposed to the mind stone and it had changed her. It'd whispered too her, tried to control her and drive her mad like so many of the others. If not for her brother, she would have done mad.

"I told me a lot about the Universe. Things... I do not think anyone should know."

She was offering him an opportunity to talk about it if he wanted and if not, that was okay too. "My brother and I are from Sokovia on Earth. I didn't hear about what happened in New York until years later." There was nothing in her voice that suggested she blamed him for that incident, merely that it was something that happened.

"There are many means of concealment which are beyond the mundane." He smiles. "You have noticed the city is in constant flux, have you not?"

"That was my question. How familiar are you with the Kree Empire?"

Because he has no clue who the Asgardians do and don't look upon with disdain. Probably do, actually, because disdain for other races seems to be part of their genetic structure.

"And how much do you know about interdimensional travel?"

He lapsed into a sullen silence. It was futile trying to hide his mind from this woman and he flexed his jaw in annoyance before responding.

"This place isn't what it should be." He scoffed, shaking his head gently. "I realize that makes little sense."

If it helps at all, it's not anything to do with being a synthetic being or disgusting human. Jane would be hostile at the idea that anyone could manage to have sex with her and would protest against it. She flips Connor a double bird as she approaches the dorm building.

"Wasn't my point, asshole. But trust me, no one would buy Cliff's services. It's not slavery, it's inadequacy."

Don't really care. Rotate on it, Twink." After displaying her middle fingers she shoves her hands back into her ruined pockets and heads into the dorm building.

At the desk she relays her name as "Crazy Jane" loud and clear, smiling as she's given her room assignment. Once she's done she turns to them, nodding respectfully. "Gentlemen. Thanks for the assist, I really appreciate it. Now if you'd kindly fuck off, I'd appreciate it."

Tim nods. "My best friend was replaced by a clone and we didn't notice for... a lot longer than I'd like to admit." He grimaces. They should have known sooner. He'll always be annoyed with himself for that, even if it did get sorted out eventually.

"Surprise evil clones are always a pain in the ass."

He's making an assumption, but Match had been evil, and it seems like someone that had kidnapped Hank and held a gun to his head might also fall in the same category.

Oh god is he talking to Robin about the issues with evil clones? Yeah, this is where his fuckin' life is right now. He, a normal ass fuckin' Detroit cop, has dealt with fuckin' evil clones.

"You know? This is a fuckin' weird thing to happen to multiple people. And it probably happens a lot here. You go ask a bunch of people? 'Oh yeah, I had some evil clone happen back home'."

His brow knits up as he takes another drink of his beer, gaze shifting to the people around them still doing their thing.

Hank hadn't even considered the uh... synthetic... synthetic? Is that what he needs to call them now? Fine, whatever, that guy's intact nature. But he assumes that means that they weren't actually slaves. He shrugs and turns to Connor, finishing with spread hands.

"I need a sandwich."

At least the two more polite ones didn't get tased and no one got hurt. So while it was a thankless job, it was mostly successful.

This girl - "Crazy Jane", apparently, is...quite unlike anybody he's ever met. Not in the way she's treating him, but in the fact that she would treat him that way no matter who or what he was. Which... He'll take it.

"My name's Connor," he calls after her anyway, because damned if he's letting her walk off thinking 'twink' is a designation. She might never use his real name, but he's determined for her to at least hear it.

"That was your fault," he tells Hank, though without any particular bite.

And once again, Aleifr is impressed. His experience with guns was limited, but he knew how effective they were. How small the margin of error probably was if you wanted to incapacitate someone carrying one before they killed you. If this little man was able to disarm and deal with enemies carrying them, he was more capable than Aleifr had given him credit for.

There was one thing that stuck out to him even more, though.

"You weren't allowed?"

Not every place is as dangerous as Fenris. Aleifr's time here has taught him that. But the idea of someone being prevented from carrying a weapon to defend themselves ...?

Fucking insanity to him. Insanity, or the penalty for some crime or misdeed.

Listen, Nida doesn't know many orphans who were adopted. And his family is sorta, well, gone.

"Because I want vodka. And I'm not allowed to. So, you know, coffee. I could get you a cocoa or something too."

[ Erik swallows about half of his beer before nodding. ]

The Hellfire Club was an actual club. For, ah. Discerning clientele with adventurous tastes. It was a cover for the Brotherhood, as well as a useful source of blackmail for powerful people who might have otherwise gotten in our way.

[ Most of the rest of the beer. ]

She was Shaw's partner. I murdered Shaw and took over the Brotherhood. She, ah. Showed me the ropes as it were.

Interesting. They weren't as tightly intertwined in my world, at least not always. In my world the Erik there was formerly one of the Kings. But back home, it was Magneto who created the Brotherhood.

[Still, he's left smiling at the showed him the ropes'. Because, you know, David thinks that means Erik probably slept with her. Interesting.]

But yes, she was an associate of Shaw in our world too. In the end she came to Xavier's side, mostly because she wanted to seduce Scott away from Jean I think.

[So much gossip.]

"I have. It's impossible to completely map out because of it. Though there are some points that remain a constant."

It took him a while to accept the fact that there was something he couldn't explain going on with the city. Though even then he held on to the vague idea that there was something going on with holograms and some such. But ultimately, he knew that could possible be untrue.

"Two handed throwing is a valid technique." From what he's gathered using one hand is a little more advanced anyway. He did indeed do some research on your typical axe throwing rules before he started, naturally. "It sounds as if you're well on your way."

There's nothing wrong with having pride in small victories. Be proud, Hank. Be very proud.

[ Erik frowns at the talk of getting rounded up into facilities. He's still not sold on the idea of artificial intelligence, so his outrage is not as great as it would have been if those getting rounded up were mutants. But still. It's uncomfortable to consider. ]

There are times when violence is necessary. When one must fight to ensure one's very existence is one of those times. My people tried.

He looks thoughtful for a moment before glancing out toward the city, unseen due to the walls of the establishment.

"I've never heard of Sokovia." And he wasn't able to muster up any degree of concern for the lack of knowledge there. He was too focused on what she'd said of the stone, and he shook his head. "If it spoke to you, then you've interacted with it more than I ever did. Any thoughts I had were...not my own." He smiled slightly at that. "Well, I wanted to win, I wanted to...be powerful. It took that and it twisted it into hatred and malice, and after it was taken that hatred stayed, mostly because it was mine, just enhanced. It never spoke, though."

At that, a thought occurred to him, and his eyebrows rose at the implication. "Perhaps there's a reason for that. I can be...stubborn." He chuckled at the admission. It was an understatement. "Perhaps the Stone knew I would never go along with an idea that wasn't mine, and so it was."

"I've heard of them, but only distantly. Asgard has little to do with those beyond the Nine Realms."

And he'd really only heard of them on Sakaar, but there had been hundreds of races he'd never encountered there.

"In theory? Much, but not in practice. I've yet to have the opportunity."
